                                       11th Grade Writing Assessment

The 11th Grade Writing Assessment, an important benchmark for Austin-East, is just a couple of weeks away, February 1, 2012.  This important examination is a part of the overall English Adequate-Yearly Progress benchmark for Austin-East Magnet High School.

Last year's 11th Graders did a phenomenal job on this examination, with 95% of all 11th grade test takers scoring "proficient" or above on this examination.

Our eleventh grade English teachers are doing their best to get our students prepared for this examination.  But, we still need your help.  Below is a link to three writing prompts for your students to practice.  Submission of a completed persuasive essay to their 11th grade English teacher means extra credit; but more importantly, it means practice and progress toward this important college-readiness examination.

To the Persuasive Prompts...

Small Learning Community Barometers

Small Learning Communities (SLCs) are important to the makeup of Austin-East Magnet High School.  In order to assess our progress toward academic goals, a system of "barometers" has been created which allow us to measure our progress toward success.  These measurements of progress are taken each 4.5 period.  The items measured are as follows:

1) % of students passing all four classes (toward an 86.6% graduation rate in 2012)

2) % of students attending class (with statewide goal of 93%)

3) # of students suspended

4)  ACT PLAN score (10th grade assessment of potential ACT score)

5)  11th Grade Writing Assessment (% of students scoring 1-6, with 3-6 at proficiency); benchmarks indicated, with actual assessment in Feb. 2012

6)  Discovery scores for English II examination (progress benchmarks/predictors for this AYP examination, given at conclusion of each semester)

7)  Discovery scores for Algebra I examination (progress benchmarks/predictors for this AYP examination, given at the conclusion of each semester, separated by Full year vs. semester Algebra students)

8)  Discovery scores for Biology I examination (progress benchmarks/predictors for this graduation requirement, given at the conclusion of each semester)

9)  AP/Dual enrollment numbers:  total number of students successfully taking (then completing) AP/Dual enrollment credit.

10) Magnet transfers:  number of students transferring to Austin-East for participation in the magnet program.

Knox County’s Talley wins National Merit Scholarship

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. (Oct. 7, 2011) – Peter Talley, of Knoxville, has been named one of the nation’s top students.

Talley was one of 15,000 high school seniors of a pool of 1.5 million students nationwide to be selected as a finalist for the National Merit Scholars Program.

The scholarship is being used to support his mechanical engineering studies at Tennessee Tech University. He is one of two National Merit Scholars to enroll at TTU this fall.

“We are delighted they’ve come to Tech and are going to be Golden Eagles,” TTU President Bob Bell said. “Any university in the country would have been honored to have them and we wish them the very best.”

Talley, the son of Alex and Linda Talley, graduated from Austin-East High School. He said he plans to go into a career in aerospace engineering after completing his education.

The National Merit Scholarship Program began in 1955. The program focuses on high school students who enter by taking a preliminary test. The test contains a mixture of questions that evaluate students in a number of areas from critical reading to math to writing skills.

Finalists must have an outstanding academic record throughout their high school careers and be recommended by their high school principals. Finalists are students who are high achievers both academically and in their schools and communities.

The National Merit Scholarship Program operates without government assistance. Scholarships are funded by 450 business organizations that share the goal of honoring scholastic champions.
